Activated carbon is used because it is the most versatile of all adsorbents due to its  broad pore size distribution and pore volume, which makes it suitable for virtually any process generating solvent-laden  air. In most cases the granular or pelletized activated carbon is installed in a fixed bed with the liquid or gas passing  through the bed. The compounds to be removed are retained on the activated carbon.  The carbon is used until exhaustion.
